In an earlier posting,
Owls are cool, I mention seeing an owl on the roof of my local library. The other day I saw it again in the exact same spot. I got out of the car to get a closer look and realized it's fake -- it's an owl decoy. There must be a reason for it being there since it's not terribly obvious to the human eye.

Owl decoys are used to scare away other birds. A neighbour behind us put up a huge TV antenna a few years back, and I mean one of those old fashioned monstrosities that were common when we were kids (I guess he'd rather have the eyesore hanging off the side of his house and get 3 channels for free than pay for cable). Anyhoo, he put a fake owl at the top of his antenna, presumably to ward off any birds that may choose to perch upon it and poo on his roof.
... and there you have it!
Cool. But I wonder why the library is trying to discourage birds?
I remember disecting owl "pellets" (I can never remember if the pellets are coughed up like hairballs or excreted out the back like... well you know) in school. Once you cracked the "skin" of matted hair and fibre, there was all kinds of cool things inside the pellet...tiny mice skulls and bones for example. Yeah.
